This week’s post was supposed to be a little thinkpiece on Chicago’s suburbia / a love letter to The Orwells, but I got really caught up in making a playlist, so you’re getting that instead. Plus, it’s a holiday weekend, and who wants to read anything of substance over a holiday weekend? Not I. We’ll tackle suburbia next week. In the meantime, here’s a playlist meant to soundtrack your long, lazy weekend. Not Your Mom’s BBQ compliments the type of Labor Day that involves a small group of friends, grilled meats, and a lot of weed.
Pay special attention to the Angel Olsen track Forgiven/Forgotten, which I think encapsulates that atmosphere perfectly (and whose lyrics really spoke to me this week). Her latest album, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, strikes me as a kind of working girl’s stoner rock: atmospheric but contained, raw yet pointed. With clever, often devastating lyrics, she has just the right amount of girl power without being campy. A better Best Coast, if you will. I promised more mixtapes, didn't I? A bit about this one:
I am on a perpetual conquest to indoctrinate my friends into the world of indie rock and electronica, to varied results. I've found that usually most successful way of doing this is to make a mixtape for them, burn it to a disc, and tell them to put it in their car stereo. That way, when their iPhone only has 5% battery left they'll have no choice but to play the CD (because ANYTHING is better than putting on the radio). Recently this method has found some success with my best friend Deana, who has even requested more tapes since the initial few.
This weekend is Deana's birthday and thus, this mixtape was born. While it's meant to celebrate her big day, it's also perfect for any and all kinds of weekend shenanigans. It's a playful lot of songs with stomping beats, sing-alongable vocal lines, and some seriously sexy bass play. Get ready to party.

Because I've been unintentionally neglecting LOOSE L!PS a bit, I'm going to try to make up for lost time and missed music with a couple mixtapes. In the days when mixtapes graced this page fairly regularly, they were known as M!Xes. We'll stick with that.
Today's M!X is called Summer Sun, because I worship at the altar of alliteration and am horrible at unique titles. It's supposed to be played at any time in the summer…sun. 24/7 preferably. It's perfect for pool parties, driving around with the top down, or backyard BBQs. I wouldn't really recommend it for lovemaking, but am also assuming you don't get down on your lawn in broad day light. (though if you do, props.)

Hello again, I can’t believe summer is almost over!
At least there’s one positive--it’s finally that time of year again. This will be my 6th straight Lollapalooza excursion, and I could not be more excited. There’s nothing I love more than enjoying my favorite acts under the beautiful Chicago skyline, and this line-up is stacked! My personal schedule includes Deadmau5, Explosions in the Sky, Ratatat, Pretty Lights, Afrojack, Beirut, Phantogram, DFA 1979, even some hip-hop with The Cool Kids and Atmosphere. I could go on…
This months mix is Lollapalooza-themed, with a couple extra goodies. I wanted to try and capture the more “chill” aspects of the weekend, choosing the songs and artists accordingly. All the songs pay homage to the scheduled acts, including remixes by/of the artists. In chronological order of performance, from Feed Me to Deadmau5, I hope to provide you with some relaxing essentials from Lollapalooza. The extra goodies meet the “chill” requirements as well, with sick beats from J. Dilla, Skream’s relaxed, cool summer jam, and a fitting conclusion from hip-hop legends Gang Starr. Because everyone should know your steez.

A month ago I posted up the first-ever LOOSE L!PS M!X with the promise that there would be more to come. Well, here's the second! While last months was all about 'Spring Music,' this one is all for summer. Specifically, my favorite summertime activity: being completely and utterly useless while lounging by the pool. As far as I'm concerned, it isn't really summer until I'm propped up with a book by the side of that crystal-clear chlorinated water, smelling like tanning oil and without a care in the world. Here's a playlist for those moments. At just under an hour long and filled with breezy, dreamy electro. It's perfect, uplifting background music while also being chill enough to allow you to nod off for a mid-day nap. This mix is tested and true (though certainly not tired) : Though a few of these songs are new, the majority are from last summer, where they faithfully served as my daily playlist.

I started off the week with a mix, and now I'm ending it with one.
About a month ago a friend who works at 8tracks [the new create-your-own mixtape website that--with the release of its new iPhone app this past week--looks set to become the next big thing in music streaming] asked me to do an interview about what makes LL tick for a series on bloggers they're doing over at their Tumblr. He also asked me to compile an 8-track mix for the occasion, which is what you're getting today. Here is the first of what I hope to be a monthly or bi-monthly series of mixtapes here on LOOSE L!PS. We're gonna call them LOOSE L!PS M!Xes. Sometimes I might make them, sometimes Russ might make them, and hopefully sometimes we can get special guests to make them. Woohoo!
