LOOSE L!PS M!X : Almost Spring

I started off the week with a mix, and now I'm ending it with one.
About a month ago a friend who works at 8tracks [the new create-your-own mixtape website that--with the release of its new iPhone app this past week--looks set to become the next big thing in music streaming] asked me to do an interview about what makes LL tick for a series on bloggers they're doing over at their Tumblr. He also asked me to compile an 8-track mix for the occasion, which is what you're getting today. Here is the first of what I hope to be a monthly or bi-monthly series of mixtapes here on LOOSE L!PS. We're gonna call them LOOSE L!PS M!Xes. Sometimes I might make them, sometimes Russ might make them, and hopefully sometimes we can get special guests to make them. Woohoo!

// Read the interview HERE.
// Stream the mixtape via the above player. (on your iPhone with the new app!)
// Download the entire mixtape below.

Or, if you already have all these songs (we've featured most of them before), grab the one we've never posted (Louis La Roche's INDISPENSABLE Missing You) by right-clicking the name on the tracklist.

Comedown Sunday: Tear Club

There is 6" of snow on the ground here in Chicago...if that not depressing I don't know what is.
Let me tell you, a white Christmas isn't quite all it's cracked up to me. My bruised bum can attest to that after one too many slips on the icy driveway. I know you kids in Florida and California probably won't understand these sentiments, as you're blessed with good weather year-round, but I am in desperate need of some kind of tropical pick-me-up. When craving an island breeze fix, the best remedy (other than a plane ticket to Hawaii) is D.I.S.C.O.Texas, a production collective based out of Portugal, which includes some of my absolute favorite producers, Moullinex, Xinobi, and Justin Faust. Needless to say, today I've been on a total D.I.S.C.O.Texas kick, and while your side of the states might not be experiencing quite the same types of ball-busting weather, I think you will nonetheless appreciate this one. Kick back and nurse your holday hangover with the smooth flute work and airy vocals of Moullinex's beachy Tear Club.

Sorry guys, no downloading this time. Moullinex's Chocolate EP isn't set to be released until January on Gomma Records, and he's not giving any kind of promo downloads in the meantime. This track nonetheless deserves a listen, or several. Be sure to check Gomma's Beatport page in January to buy it for yourself.

Jesus Was A B-Boy (Moullinex Remix)

My iTunes crashed today, and every single one of my playlists was deleted. I can’t even begin to tell you how many hours I devoted to making those stupid playlists. I am an o.c.d. freak when it comes to my iTunes library, and I had every song that I thought was worth listening to organized by genre/artist/remix artist/mood/blog….well…you get the picture. Needless to say, it’s infuriating. What’s been somewhat nice though is that in the process of re-organizing my library, I’ve gone through a ton of music that I haven’t listened to in awhile.

One such song I came upon was Moullinex's remix of Ben Mono's Jesus Was a B-Boy. Words cannot express how much I love this song. It might be my favorite electronic song ever; it’s definitely top 3. I’ve been meaning to post it since I first started this blog, and it's a good thing I’m finally getting to it because this song rocks. My mom even jams out in the car with me to it. Which is saying a LOT, as she normally won’t let me turn the volume up past 6. Seriously.

It’s about the lord Jesus envisioned as a b-boy (break dancer) and a Dogtown skateboarder at the height of that era in the late 70’s. The lyrics are fantastic, they’re tongue in cheek but remarkably clever. I don’t care if you think it’s religious blasphemy or not. Turn up your speakers, listen to the song, pay attention to the lyrics, wait for that dirty descending bassline that first makes an appearance at 1:43, and don’t try to tell me that it didn’t get you grooving.

Superman

**Track Streaming Coming Soon!

Not much can be said about German/Portuguese uberproducer Moullinex that hasn't already been repeated time and time again.
Bottom line is that this guy can do virtually no wrong. He has been setting the nu-disco world on fire with his masterful usage of funk basslines, pulsating synths, and frequent incorporation of (!!!) real instruments. While he is perhaps known best for his remixes of popular acts like Cut Copy, Sebatien Tellier, and Two Door Cinema Club, his solo work is equally formidable.

This track comes from his Superman EP, which just dropped June 4th on Gomma Records.

It's a delightful 6-minute number that makes me envision dark clubs filled with beautiful people. The bass plucks away steadily throughout the song while synths and guitars weave in and out, layering until the vocals come in. Whoever the singer is, he's filtered so heavily through a vocoder that I can't understand a single word he's saying. But that's what makes it all so mysterious and sexy.

P.S. As a general rule I dislike most dance music videos, but I think this one captures the mood of the song perfectly. Enjoy.
