Mainland

I stumbled upon this track during one of my regular, 2am binges into the depth of Soundcloud. Its discovery only justified my insomnia.

Cape Lion are a duo hailing from Sweden, consisting of Carl-Johan Sevedag and Martin Wiklund. They classify themselves as electronic pop; I think of them as a Royksöpp + M83 hybrid. Upbeat electronic melodies are coupled with quality lyricism and vocals, with a splash of epic. But Pop. Epic Electronic Pop.

All of their their songs are well-produced and catchy, but Mainland sticks out to me the most. It kicks off quickly, with descending drums leading right into the hook. I’m particularly fond of the lyrics:

now we’ve grieved enough – time to let it go
we’ll be drifting off – time to let it go

Que sera, sera vibes all the way, the song stresses the importance of living in the now, ignoring the temptation to imagine how things should/could be within different circumstances. It’s this coupling of serious, emotional lyrics over an upbeat, catchy electronic melody that defines this group’s sound.
All this, delivered in a beautiful Scandinavian-pop package. I’m sold.

Listen to Mainland below, and check Cape Lion out on Soundcloud/Facebook/Sweden.

Take Care Of You

I'm listening to this song on repeat while doing my best to find some kind of background on the producers.  Apparently, it’s a duo comprised of Mazego and Vitesse, two Parisian fellows with a few remixes to their respective names.  Combine them and you get Saje, the moniker under which this song was released.  The Saje Soundcloud dates back 6 months, while Mazego the solo artist seems to have been on the Facebook game since 2011. Despite this short timeline, the sounds these two are churning out are far from novice. With two songs to Saje’s credit, they’ve already been able to create a unique, recognizable sound in a musical climate of copycat-regurgitation.

To try and describe their music is to study the constant redefinition and meshing of electronic music genres.  Deep-Electro-Trap-Chill-Dream-Step, if I may.  Take Care of You is a hybrid of Tom Misch’s guitar-centric beats, with Odesza’s lingering synths and massive drops.  Saje is now 2/2 with an uncredited male vocalist, whom I can assume is either one of the two, or simply an unnamed, golden vocal vessel.  Regardless of genre definitions or background story, these guys are damn good.  It’s refreshing to see two relative newcomers coming out with completely original material, while providing surprising well-written and appropriately themed vocals.  I’m sold, and methinks you will be as well.

Shine A Light

Hello again. After a three year hiatus from LL, I’d like to re-introduce myself via an indispensable track.

As LL’s primary purpose is to promote Goldroom and Flight Facilities, I thought I’d maintain the status quo by promoting the upcoming Flight Facilities album. Doing this without reposting Two Bodies for the millionth time proved to be difficult, however, so I thought I’d delve into one of my personal favorites from Oz, their remix of the C90’s Shine A Light

It’s hard to believe three years have passed since this gem was released. While it was ultimately lost in the buzz surrounding Crave You and Foreign Language, I would argue this as the quintessential FF track. No matter what’s happening in my life, this is one of those tracks that makes my problems melt away. Beautiful lyrics, a catchy chorus, and an introduction that grabs you in with cascading synths and simple, steering piano.

Kudos to Grand Theft Auto V for featuring this song in-game… during a mission where your character takes acid and jumps out of a plane. Well played.

Till Sunrise

It’s pouring outside, my power is out, and today I saw three cars stuck in a flash flood (which I narrowly escaped). It’s the last weekend of summer and I was ready for some Blue Hawaii vibes, but things are shaping up to be way more Sharknado 2. Thank goodness for Goldroom. His latest track, Till Sunrise, will have you, me, and everyone we know feeling tip top tropical til long after summer ends.

Unfamiliar with Goldroom? Shame on you. Someone once commented to me that LOOSE L!PS' primary purpose seems to be promoting the music of Goldroom and Flight Facilities. That’s not the case, but it's not too far off. Anyway, if you’re going to make reading the hallowed pages of this blog a regular occurrence, you best acquaint yourself with one of our favorite artists, stat.

Real Slow

While our government is crumbling under the weight of its own idiocy, in world news, Australian musicians are still killing it. At least everyone is being consistent, right?

As far as consistency goes, Miami Horror could very well have their picture in the dictionary in under the word, as their brand of sunny, feel-good pop rock never fails to disappoint. With this in mind, we had good reason to be excited when our buds at Neon Gold announced that they were releasing the band's new single, Real Slow. While Real Slow has a bit more of a dance groove to it than the name might suggest, its breezy chorus is everything we needed to help ease our begrudging transition from summer. You can cop the single here, stream it below, and -- GREAT NEWS -- see it in real time tonight, if you're in NYC.

While we're on the subject of Australians, another formidable group are making their way to the big apple, and various cities across the country. Gold Fields have been tramping around US for the past month, bringing their blend of hybrid power pop with them. They'll be in NYC on Thursday for NG's monthly Popshop installment. Check it out, as its sure to be all koalas and rainbows and sparkles. Best kind of party.

Embrace

Our man Goldroom is back with his first EP in two years. Luckily, it doesn't feel like it's been that long what with the steady stream of remixes and one-off originals he throws our way...but it's still cause to celebrate. The EP showcases a string of female-fronted pop singles released over the past couple years, and includes the brand new Embrace. It seems Goldroom has saved the best for last, as Embrace is probably his catchiest original to date. And that's really saying something. We might credit that superlative in part to the co-writing credits from Australia's George Maple (a chick you should get to know immediately), but seriously - just try to get this shimmering chorus out of your head. Stream the tune below, and support the man by buying the full EP on iTunes.

Rollercoaster

Remember a few months ago when Skream said he was giving up on dubstep to start producing disco; and all the skrillex-worshiping high school ravers were like "ahhh what the fuck man?!", while everyone who had listened to dubstep before 'EDM' was a 'thing' were like "hmm ok yeah that makes sense."? Well, Skream just released his first single showcasing this new direction, and no one need be disappointed. Rollercoaster is funky, fresh, and expertly produced. Skream's talent showcased in a new medium is a great big gust of fresh air, and we're pretty excited to hear what his future catalog has in store. Stream the single below and check out its just-released music video, which is really, really cute.

Swim And Sleep (Lindstrom Remix)

I wish that I could swim and sleep like a shark does
I'd fall to the bottom and I'd hide til the end of time

All songs previously in my "blog/share with the world" queue got pushed back due to the release of a new Lindstrøm remix. If you've been following this blog for any amount of time (or since the beginning - holler to all five of you), you'll know that if I subscribed to any religion, it would be Lindstrømism. He's just perfect. Or rather…his music is perfect. I was especially taken by his latest remix endeavor as it saw him collaborating with one of my new favorite bands (one who's bandwagon I am admittedly late to jump on), Oregon's Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra are a psych-rock band making waves with their 2013 sophomore album, II. For ease of reference's sake, UMO sound like Tame Impala with less fuzz, breezier melodies, and more accessible lyrics. Take the experimental out of psychedelia, and you have UMO - a nice place to be, if I'm to judge. But forget rock for a minute -- Lindstrøm's rework of their 2012 single Swim and Sleep (Like A Shark Does) takes a lilting melody and turns it intergalactic disco spectacular. Still with me? Check it out.

Bonus: The original, oh so sweet, single.

Penny

You're my perfect little...penny

Is 2013 the year that garage rock officially "comes back," or was that 2012? Whenever the date, Hanni El Khatib is a welcome genre contributor. This spring sees him releasing his sophomore album, Head In The Dirt, produced by the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach (insert approving head nod here). While the album's first single was a raucous, messy affair - shaped by a charging drumline and growling guitars - the second single Penny is a sunny, organ-drenched love song.

Penny shines on its own, but label-mates Classixx took it and did more than polish it up - they turned it into an entirely different creature altogether. A bright, even cute, rock tune is transformed to a deep disco slow burner under their touch. A total 180, but wildly successful. Stream the original below, download the remix, and be sure to look for Head In The Dirt on Innovative Leisure later this spring.

Love Is Dangerous

When the waves come crashing baby I'm just trying to survive.

Things you may or may not care about so we'll keep it short:
1) LOOSE L!PS is now coming to you from NYC
2) "Post Regularly" was a top New Year's resolution - so expect at least bi-weekly updates.
3) I've collected so much great music the past few months of vacation; I can't wait to share.

First up in Feburary, this gleeful Chrome Canyon remix of French Horn Rebellion. FHR was the first concert I saw after moving to the city (at Neon Gold's evercool PopShop), and this single was the clear standout. But while the original Love Is Dangerous (buy the EP here) incorporates so many styles it can end up feeling all over the place, Chrome Canyon filters through the noise by backing the indelible vocal line with funk - pure and simple. A sinfully satisfying bass line ties up any loose strings and propels the song to full disco-revival glory.

Dance on but just remember, it's almost Valentine's Day - don't go breaking too many hearts.

Clair de Lune

I could wax fanatic on the genius of Flight Facilities until I exceeded my bandwidth, but if you've ever heard their music (and you had better), there's really nothing more I need say that you don't already know.

At the end of the summer the boys announced they had signed with New York's illustrious Glassnote Records, joining the likes of Phoenix, Mumford & Sons, and Childish Gambino. Their first single with the label, Clair de Lune was released last week, followed by the music video earlier today. The song marks somewhat of a sonic departure for the duo, known for their hooky disco-pop, and sees them trading in funky bass and big choruses for swirling synths and ethereal vocals. But don't let that deter you. The seven-minute single (with no radio edit in sight) is a grower. It's one such a song that sneakily embeds itself into your subconscious - one you catch yourself singing without even thinking, at which point you have to immediately rush to your computer to find. The accompanying video, also clocking in at 7+ minutes, is a beautifully shot little story. Complete with - you guessed it - a 'pensively driving through a valley' montage.

Stream the single and video below, then buy it on iTunes.

I Met You

Christy Lee Rogers

Today in the most recent installment of our perpetual "Why Australians, Scadinavians, and French people make better music than you" series, we feature the talents of Anna Lunoe and Flume, two young Australians making names for themselves - both as solo artists and collaborators - in the world of electronic dance music and pop. I Met You sees the duo joining forces for the first time, melding Lunoe's vocals and disco sensibilities with Flume's (who is only 20 years old) stuttering syncopation and lush production style. Let's just say, one would hope this isn't the last time these two team up. I Met You is (was?) probably my song of the summer, with its breezy vibe capturing my laid-back mindset, and the grooving bridges psyching me up for steaming nights. If I didn't know better, I'd say this song will even carry me into fall if I'm not careful.

Which I have no intention of being.

Stream the single below, out now on the illustrious Future Classic, and buy the mp3 before the leaves start falling. Also check out the music video below. I'm not usually a fan of videos, but this one pushes all the right buttons.

1 Out Of 2

Breakbot is back. It's not that he ever really left (thank goodness), but he spent a considerable amount of time focusing on releasing remixes rather than original material. But just this week, he released his third EP of original material, 1 out of 2. Like his unforgettable first single, Baby I'm Yours, the EP's title track also features French vocalist Irfane, who adds a touch of class with his smooth croon. And like his first single, this one is also pretty close to perfect.

As an on-point Viceroy tweeted, "Breakbot is the electronic Elton John." By this I assume he means that Breakbot can do no wrong (I mean can you really think of a terrible Elton John song?), in which case, I agree wholeheartedly. Sure he's an electronic artist, and French no less, but Breakbot's style transcends genres, which has allowed him to create some of the best pop songs of the past decade. Not convinced? Time will tell.

1 Out Of 2 was released Monday, in Europe [buy it here]. Still waiting on that US release… Until then, stream the dancey Oliver remix below, and head over to our Facebook page to hear the original.

2011's BEST KEPT SECRET
The true implications of the NDAA, allowing the US government to detain "terrorist suspects" for indefinite amounts of time for national security. It ignores our Constitutional Rights spelled out in the Bill of Rights, allowing indefinite detention without trial.  The US is becoming a police state.  Why Obama signed the Act and why the public hasn't spoken out against it is beyond me.

If SOPA passes later this year, music blogs such as this will probably struggle to exist, as the Federal Government will have the power to shut down websites viewed as a source of pirated material.  WTF America?

Magic

Ashley Lande Brown

What is a J Paul Getto? A funkless disco slum? Or perhaps some sort of concentration camp where those with no groove are relegated?

Whatever the case, Tony Saputo (formerly 1/2 of the massive Swivel Hips) and Maurice Tamraz always bring the goods. With their tracks caned by everyone from MSTRKRFT to Armand van Helden, this duo is bringing back that classic pumping disco sound, recalling the days of house music at its finest. [Something you probably didn't know - Tony was one of the masterminds behind Felix da Housecat's groundbreaking remix of Nina Simone's Sinnerman.

For you Dallas heads, they'll be playing the free Oak Lawn Halloween Party next weekend - don't sleep.

Check out their latest banger, Magic, available now on Beatport.

Always On The Run (Peter & The Magician Remix)

Julian Bialowas

My future husband released an EP today.

Well...this is only a half-truth. The EP was only released in France and who knows what other European countries. We Americans have to wait. Merde.

Anyway, when I can actually get my virtual hands on it is irrelevant, let's talk details. The EP features several remixes of Yuksek's latest single, Always On The Run. One such remix is by Peter & The Magician. So, to clarify: This is a Peter & The Magician Remix of a Yuksek original. If that registered clearly with you, at this point, all further information is irrelevant. Are you reading this anymore? No? Good. Surrender to the sound.

Let's All Chant (DatA Remix)

The Acid Messiah, by Craig Redman

I've been meaning to post this song for literally ten months or so, and never had a 'good' time. It's one of my ultimate pump-up songs; I usually listen to it towards the middle-end of a run for that extra oomph. At the very least, it always makes me smile. Today's my birthday, so if there's ever a good time to sneak in some 'extra oomph,' it's this one.

DatA's remix of Michael Zager Band's iconic (albeit somewhat ridiculous) Let's All Chant is nothing but fun. It's over-the-top, flashy, and yet irresistibly catchy in a way that only the most amazing disco can be. DatA announced awhile back on his Facebook that a comeback is imminent, so stay tuned. The world could always use a little more of this type of unapologetic disco bombast.

Crate Diggin' : Shep Pettibone

Here is the first of what hopefully becomes a semi-regular series, where we show love to those grinding long before the internets, names that might have slipped through the cracks between today's Tweets and tomorrow's Hype Machine mashups: This is CRATE DIGGIN'.

Shep Pettibone. You have either never heard the name or are rolling on the floor laughing at me for posting this here.
In a nutshell, Pettibone was the sound of 80s pop/club music (think epic snares) and the mastermind behind countless artists you would shell out $65 to see perform without blinking. Heard of any of these?
Madonna - Vogue
Janet Jackson - The Pleasure Principle
Pet Shop Boys - Heart
Duran Duran - I Don't Want Your Love

Pettibone's extensive discography probably deserves a blog on its own (check out his indulgent 15 minute mix of Vogue) but I will leave you with a couple personal favorites and an amazing mixtape from 1983.
